Urban Single Family Home 2021
The Flexi Home is a net-zero house designed for single family occupancy in urban Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The design is flexible for both traditional and non-traditional family occupancies which can re-shape as the family’s lifestyle changes. The house can function as a single unified space, but can be easily reconfigured to create two independent living areas. The second space can become a living area for a carer as the residents age, a space for a university student to live due to high housing prices, or even as a rentable self-contained space for cost offset.

The Flexi Home targets creative living, ensuring the longevity of the building by facilitating a wide variety of occupants and layouts. It is designed to support residences through all stages of life, providing equality and accessibility for anyone, including those who are elderly or wheelchair bound.

On a small block close to the city, the Flexi Home reduces urban sprawl with its small block size. The home also supports a more minimalist lifestyle, allowing the occupants to be conscientious about their environmental impact in a way that does not diminish their quality of life.

The goal of the Flexi Home is to generate more than enough energy required to live a comfortable, high quality life. This meant minimizing energy use across the building by incorporating good caliber insulation, LED lighting and energy efficient heating and cooling systems.

With the addition solar panels and solar battery, the cost of utilities will be very small, especially because the house is net zero. Even in the event of the house buying all its electricity from the grid and selling all the generated solar energy, the annual electricity cost will be only be about $940.
